He began his career in 1997 with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. From 2000 to 2003, he played with the university team St. Cloud State in the NCAA.

It is chosen in 1999 during  the took part  into the National Hockey League by the Colorado Avalanche in the 8th round, 240th. From 2003 to 2007, he plays with the AHL Hershey Bears, the Lowell Lock Monsters and the Albany River Rats. During the 2006-2007 season, he played his first NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche. On 1 July 2008 he signed a four-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
